which it is believed penetrated to the black powder magazines,
setting off the smokeless powder magazines adjacent and causing the explosion which destroyed the ship fwd.

大型の徹甲爆弾が火薬庫で炸裂したと考えていますね。
　まあ黒色火薬庫としているのが正しいかどうかは別として装甲を貫通すること自体は早い段階から疑っていない様子です。
