"We are going to explore all the options for Japan joining us on an FCAS [Future Combat Air System] journey, or us joining Japan on their journey," Wallace said when asked whether merging the Japanese F-X fighter jet program with the British Tempest was a possibility being considered by London.

Speaking at a media event on Tuesday at the Farnborough International Airshow, Wallace noted that the air force requirements of Britain, Japan and Italy are similarly aligned.


"I'm confident that Japan is quite determined. They have a requirement they need to deliver, we have a requirement we need to deliver and I think we're all in the right place," he said in response to a question from Nikkei Asia.

"It's about now marrying political will with obviously the industrial base, and of course workshare, which is always really important," Wallace said. "Now what form that takes, whether it's joint development of part of the program, whether it's an overall partnership, all of that is to be discussed."
