A US Air Force test squadron recently smashed a land speed record using a magnetic sled
at Holloman Air Force Base in southeast New Mexico.

The base published a video Monday showing the 846th Test Squadron's magnetically levitated
(MagLev) sled system reaching 633 miles per hour as it went down the track.

The system uses liquid helium, rockets and superconductor magnets to push the sled down the 2,100-foot track
as it glides just above it, reducing friction and increasing speeds.

In 2013, the squadron was able to propel the sled to 513 miles per hour.
The new record is approximately 120 miles per hour faster
