ヘルプにはIf you use this type of a preamble in an array–environment, you get a column in LR mode because the additional $’s cancel the existing $’s.
と書いているのですが、array環境でだけでしょうか？
$$y=f(x)$$は数式モードのキャンセルじゃなくて、普通ディスプレイモードでの表示
