ここに出てくる検索結果のなかみを検討すればわかるのですが、

This (= this word ) is two words.
It's two words.
"Alot" is two words.

などの例がたくさん出てきます。これはたとえば、"a lot" と書くべきところを
"alot" などと書くネイティブがたくさんいますが、「この alot というふうに見える単語は実は二つの単語から
出来ている」という意味でこのような言い方をしているようです。

以上は、主語が単数で述語が複数の例でしたが、さらに、主語が複数で述語が単数というのも見られます。

We are a company.
We are a team.
We are a troubled nation.
We are a buried generation.
We are a humbled factory.

"We are a " というキーワードで検索すれば、たくさん出てくる。

上記の詩を今さっき読み終えた。知らない単語のオンパレードだったので、
一行ごとに辞書を引きながらゆっくり読んだ。すごく時間がかかった。
なんでこのしを読もうと思ったかというと、Tomas Hardy の小説に
"Far from a Madding Crowd" っていうタイトルのものがあるけど、
そのタイトルが実は上記の詩から来ていることを初めて知って、
この詩の全文を読んでみたくなったからだ。けっこう長い詩だ。
なお、Hardy の小説のタイトルが出てくる箇所は、次の通り。

Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,
Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd vale of life 75
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.

こんなに高度な詩となると、よほどそれに慣れてこないとそのリズムや脚韻を
楽しむことはできないんだろうと想像する。でも、詩を通して頭韻 (alliteration) とか
脚韻 (rhyme) にいくらか慣れたあとに、Time などの高級雑誌や Herald Tribune みたいな
ゆうめいな新聞を読んでると、その見出しにそういう韻文が使われてたりして、
味わい深く感じる。

Emily Dickinson の書いた一編の詩が気に入ったので、前から気になってたけど、今回、
Everyman's Library の Pocket Poets series の Emily Dickinson 詩集を買った。
まだ走り読みしかしてないけど、どれを読んでもあんまりよくわからない。
どれもこれも実に短い詩で、単語もすごくやさしい。それなのに理解しにくい。
文法をかなり逸脱してるように見える。今まで読んできた詩は、
けっこう難しくて長かったとはいえ、すべてかなり文法に沿っていたように思う。
たとえば

日本語の詩ですら、ピンとこないことも多いのだから、
英語の小説や評論が読めても、詩が分からないことが多くあるのは
何ら不思議じゃない。

大体が、英語の小説が難しい難しいと不平を言ってる奴に、
「じゃ、君は日本語の小説をスラスラと読んでるのかね？」と、
問いただしたいw

さらに言えば、日本語の詩をそう好きでもない人が英語の詩を
読もうとしても、余り長続きし難いのではないか？

逆に言えば、英語力が未熟でも、詩の面白さを味わえる場合は
あるはずだ。好きな人は読むだろうし、全然、英語力がない場合は
どうか知らないが、８割か９割分かって、気に入った一節があれば
良い。

日本の現代詩も相当難解だしw

Virginia Woolf の "Mrs. Dalloway" を読んでると Shakespeare の台詞がよく出てくる。
"Fear no more the heat o' the sun" っていう言葉も何度か出てきたので気になって
調べてみたら、これも Shakespeare だった。改めてその一節をすべて読んでみたけど、
辞書を引かなくても大体の意味がわかるからびっくりした。Shakespeare って僕にとっては
難しいと思いがちだけど、大雑把になら辞書なしでも理解できる部分もけっこうありそう。
それはともかく、とてもいい詩だ。

買ったんだけど、その詩集の巻頭に挙げられている詩が、次のもの。

これは、歌の歌詞のようです。life とか time が "stand still" するという表現が
ときどき使われているようだけど、英語のネイティブたちはそれを positive なニュアンスで
使っているのか、それとも negative なニュアンスで使っているのかを確かめたくて、
Google 検索しているうちに見つけたものです。この歌詞の中では、"make life stand still"
という表現が出てきます。

検索し直したら、いい解説が見つかった。Exitor's note がこの詩の冒頭についていて、

"Amazing Grace" という有名な賛美歌を作った人が誰なのかなんて考えもしなかったけど、
あちこちの詩人について調べているうちに、その賛美歌の作者にたどり着いた。
その詩人の生き様って、すごく面白いということを知った。

John Henry Newton (July 24, 1725 – December 21, 1807) was a British sailor and
Anglican clergyman. Starting his career at sea, at a young age, he became involved
with the slave trade for a few years, and was himself enslaved for a period.
After experiencing a religious conversion, he became a minister, hymn-writer, and
later a prominent supporter of the abolition of slavery. He was the author of
many hymns, including "Amazing Grace" and "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken

という nursery rhyme が出てきた。その由来や背景を調べようと思って検索したら、
意外なことが書いてあった。nursery rhymes にも深い意味合いがあるんだね。

Virginia Woolf の "The Waves" という小説を読んでいたら、"Far away a bell tolls" という言葉が出てきた。そこには注釈がついていて、John Donne の文章から
来ているとのこと。

というか、英詩に詳しい人なんて、日本にはせいぜい100人くらいしかいないんじゃないか。

Virginia Woolf の小説を読んでると、有名な詩歌の一節が頻繁に出てくる。
"The Waves" という作品は、この作品そのものが詩みたいなものなので、余計に
詩の一節がよく出てくる。今回は Keats の次の詩が出てきた。辞書を引きながら最後まで
読んで、吹き出してしまった。これは、まさに僕のことを唄ってるじゃないか。

今でずっと、彼女のことを思いながら、思い出の湖畔に住み着いたまま、という哀れな詩。

古い時代の詩である割には、わかりやすいんじゃないかと思います。僕の場合、辞書を
引いて単語の意味さえ調べれば、一応は全体の意味がわかりました。

だがダンの世界、ニュークリティシズム概論、分析批評入門の途中まで読み進んで停滞
ダンは松浦嘉一のソネットの注釈本を手元に置くがなかなか厄介で難しい
ニュークリティシズム概論については一通り目を通したが、これも別の問題に突き当たっている
分析批評入門については分ったつもりで読み進めているがどこまで書かれている内容が身に付いているかが問題
仕事の合間を見ての勉強だが当面続けたい

アメリカ文学全集にいくつかの詩が掲載されているとか

なんか受験参考書のタイトルが並んでいるという感じだね、発想が受験参考書的とでもいうか
この調子だと『文学のわかり方』『ノーベル賞文学の書き方』なんて本も書けそうだね

1998年に「荒れ野に行く」という小説で早稲田文学新人賞受賞をとったということだが
文学者より５流小説家をやってたほうがよさそうだよ
1997年にケンブリッジで博士課程を修了したようだが、かの地で一体何をやってたのやら
まさかここが「荒れ野」というわけじゃないだろうね
